David Paul Maus of Amery, Wisconsin passed away on September 20, 2023.

David was born on July 24, 1940, in Monticello, Minnesota at Hart Hospital to parents George and Louise Maus.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Monticello. He attended Monticello Public Schools throughout grade school, attended St. Cloud State College, and then went on to Minnesota School of Business for two years majoring in Business Management.

Throughout his youth and schooling years, he worked with his father in the family grocery store and meat market and continued full time afterwards. During this period, he met his first wife, Evelyn Stumpf, and they were married on June 25, 1962 in Maple Lake, Minnesota. From this marriage, they raised two sons, Paul and Brad, and one daughter, Theresa (Terri). This marriage, as blessed as it was, ended in a divorce in 1975.

David wanted to expand in his growth, and along with his brother Ken, purchased the Super Valu store at Shakopee, Minnesota in April of 1966. They operated it until 1970, at which time it was necessary to sell the business and move on. Ken went back to Monticello and David was hired by Red Owl Stores as Meat Cutter. After a year of searching, he was hired by May Company, a wholesale food distributor, in Minneapolis. He was employed there as a District Sales Manager with accounts in Minnesota and Wisconsin. In these travels, he got familiar with a lot of towns and still wanted to move on and have his own store, and that’s when he decided to acquire the store in Amery. He knew they were looking to sell, and he was able to complete the sale in April of 1983.

At the conclusion of his first marriage, he got involved in a singles group called Parents Without Partners. It was there, in a Knights of Columbus Hall, that he met who would be his new life partner. Her name was Rose Marie Kline, and a binding relationship was soon to develop. Dave and Rose were married on December 10, 1976. With this marriage, came along Rose’s only daughter to join in the family. With the move to Amery, and the grocery store now named Maus’ IGA, Rose also discovered that she would enjoy working with David in their new adventure. They both enjoyed the business venture, and things were going well until they were seeing the movement coming of the “Big Box Stores.” It was about this time that one of their competitor stores made an offer to buy them out, and they knew it was time.

David had a big impact on so many lives in the community as a first employer to many. He taught others about working hard, having a strong work ethic, and demonstrated leadership by being a strong example. He was loyal and committed to the community that he called home. David had a number of hobbies, when there was time, which included hunting, fishing, golfing, card playing, wood working, picture framing and an occasional trip to a casino. He was an active member of the Amery Community Club, Amery Lions Club, St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amery, and was a past Officer of the Knights of Columbus.

David was preceded in death by his wife, Rose; his parents; sister, Mary Lou Bentley; brother, James Maus; sister-in-law, Shirley Maus; brother-in-law, Dave Simondet; and son-in-law, David Fox. He leaves behind his close friend, Bette Adams and his children, Paul (Tammy) Maus of Norman, OK, Brad Maus of Jesup, IA, Terri (Jim) Wetterstrom of Farmington, MN and Carolyn Fox of Cannon Falls, MN. David is also survived by brothers, Dr. Donald Maus of Monticello, Alan (Jan) Maus of Monticello, and Ken (Mary Lynn) Maus of Eden Prairie, MN; sisters, Catherine Simondet of St. Cloud, MN and Joanne (Michael) Woodward of Big Lake, MN; 10 grandchildren, Nathan (Deena) Fox, Alex Wetterstrom, Kerstin Wetterstrom, Logan (Ashley) Childers, Austin Childers, Jacob (Johlon) Maus, Grace Maus, Chandler Maus, Jack Maus; 5 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.

A visitation will be Sunday, September 24, 2023 from 3 to 5 pm at the Williamson-White Funeral Home in Amery.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amery on Monday, September 25, 2023 at 11:00 am with a visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. A burial will take place in Monticello, MN at a later date.
