In Memory of Dwight Van Fleet


March 13, 1927 - September 2, 2019

Dwight L. Van Fleet, age 92, of Hayward, passed away Monday, September 2, 2019 at Hayward Area Memorial Hospital.  He was born March 13, 1927 in Noble County, Ohio, the son of Lafayette and Thelma (Hurst) Van Fleet.  He was united in marriage to Dorothy Marie Owen on July 26, 1950 in Readstown, WI.

Dwight proudly served his country during WWII stateside with the United States Navy decommissioning ships in both San Diego, CA and Astoria, WA.  He and his wife owned and operated Hahn’s Resort on Spider Lake for over 35 years providing a hospitable Northwood’s destination to fishermen and families.  Dwight enjoyed life up north, especially fishing, hunting and snowmobiling.  He groomed trails for many years with the Sno-Mads snowmobile club.  He also enjoyed throwing darts and playing cribbage, even though he was known to hold a few extra cards now and then.  He was also known for his delicious maple syrup.  Dwight was very active well into his nineties and splitting wood and caring for his yard kept him active and youthful. 

Dwight had the honor and privilege to take part in a VetsRoll trip to Washington D.C., a trip he was able to share with his son.

He is survived by his son, Bruce (Ann) Van Fleet of Beloit, WI; his granddaughters, Michele Van Fleet and Kristin Van Fleet both of Roscoe, IL; his great-grandson, Aiden; his siblings, Avis Hooverson of Viroqua, WI, Delores (Paul) Felton of Belvidere, IL, Sharon (Roger) Clark of Poplar Grove, IL and Dixie (Howard) Chambers of Belvidere, IL; a sister-in-law, Donna Van Fleet of Belvidere, IL; a brother-in-law, Robert Briggs of Westby, WI; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

In addition to his parents, Dwight was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy; and brother, Larry Van Fleet.

A celebration of life gathering will be held from 2:00 P.M until 4:00 P.M. on Sunday September 15, 2019 at the Hayward Veterans Community Center.  Refreshments will be provided.
