Erik was a natural athlete, participating in baseball, basketball, soccer, and hockey in his youth. He excelled at downhill ski racing, being ranked in the top 10 in the state for his age group. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout while living in Louisiana. He moved to Birchwood in 2006, then attended UWBC in Rice Lake for two years, where he was introduced to curling.
