In Memory of Eugene Johnson
Eugene “Gene” Powell Johnson of St. Croix Falls, WI passed away September 13, 2019.
Gene was born on June 20, 1937 at Indianola, Iowa to his parents, Lloyd and Iva Johnson.
Gene attended 1st and 2nd grade in Frederic, WI and then moved to Superior, WI and attended 3rd to 8th grade. Gene moved back to Frederic and attended Frederic High School from 9th to 12th grade and attended River Falls College in River Falls, WI. While attending high school, Gene was a very good basketball player on the basketball team and was also a member of the inter-mural basketball team at River Falls, WI where he attended college.
On September 13, 1958 Gene was united in marriage to Mary Anne Stusek from Grantsburg, WI. To this union were born Jean Marie, Shari Lynn, Elizabeth Anne and Mark Eugene.
At an early age Gene worked for the 3M company in Minneapolis, worked constructing bowling alleys in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa and worked many years for Gordon Fox Construction in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin.
In 1964 Gene started his own construction business. He built many homes in Frederic and then went into Commercial Construction and incorporating his business in 1972. Gene built many schools, banks, churches, apartment buildings, and fire halls. Gene had a great crew that helped make his business a success. Gene semi-retired in 2009 and felt lucky to have been in a business he really loved and that he accomplished so much.
Gene loved to golf and mainly loved the gambling part of the game. He enjoyed playing cards with his many friends and enjoyed gambling at the casinos. Gene also enjoyed bowling, snowmobiling, skiing, and enjoyed canoe trips with the kids, and he was quite a competitor when it came to ping pong!
Gene had a "loon sounding" hilarious laugh whenever he could beat his opponent, be it in golf or cards or ping pong!!!
Gene was a kind hearted, generous and loving man and really enjoyed the simple life.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Iva Johnson; brothers, Don, Rex, Charlie, Walter and Ray; sisters, Cleithra Mae, Faye and Evea; and his daughter, Jean Marie.
Gene is survived by his significant other, Sue Lucken; ex-wife and friend, Mary Anne; daughters, Shari Paulsen (Joey Ford) and Elizabeth (Matt) Chandler; and son, Mark (Biljana) Johnson; grandchildren, Lindsey Bosier, Kati Chandler, Christopher Chandler and Rachel Vaughn (Alex); great-grandchildren, Jemma Elizabeth Gatlin, Celisha Elle Gatlin and Celeste Mae Gatlin, Ella River Vaughn and Colton Alexander Vaughn; many nephews, nieces, and many dear friends.
A Celebration of Gene’s life will be held at the Frederic Golf Course, 905 S. Wisconsin Ave., Frederic, WI on Saturday, September 28th from 2 to 6:00 p.m. A toast to Gene will be at 5:30 p.m.
