In Memory of George E. Schmock

March 7, 1942 - November 26, 2024

George Eugene Schmock, 82, Staunton, VA, passed away November 26th, 2024. He leaves behind the love of his life, his partner and best friend, Shirley, daughter Denise Vissers (Brad Seehoffer) Green Bay, WI, son Charles Schmock of Waunakee, WI, 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He will also be forever missed by his sister Darlene, and all his nieces and nephews. He also will be missed by his faithful furry pal Bezhig.

George was born to Frank and Florence Schmock on March 7, 1942, the third of four children. After graduation he attended seminary intending to become a priest. After several years of soulful contemplation however, he chose to serve his world a different way and joined the US Navy. George spent two cruises aboard the USS Forrestal in the Mediterranean. He visited many exotic ports and villages in the Middle East and Europe. While on liberty from his ship with a fellow sailor from Verona, VA, he met, courted and swept off her feet his future wife, Shirley. They married in Staunton and welcomed two children in the next few years.

They moved to Wisconsin to be nearer to George’s family. George continued to serve his community providing vocational rehabilitation counseling and services for the State of Wisconsin in Northern Wisconsin. Throughout his life George was active in many recreational leagues for softball, football, and racquetball both playing and managing. He enjoyed outings with his team to tournaments and for seasonal get-togethers. Many of these men traveled alongside him to Canada each year for “Wabigoon” reunions and the greatest fish stories ever told.

After retirement George and Shirley retired to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Here they found the good life together in the Heaven that is the Blue Ridge Mountains. He was proud of his naval service and of the service of others. So much so that he participated in and led the Veteran’s Coffee program at the Staunton-Augusta County YMCA as well as leading “senior” exercise classes. George and Shirley lived on a picturesque hilltop with views of valleys and the mountains for miles. They raised chickens, turkeys and thrived in this bucolic area.

George and Shirley shared a life of hard work and hard play with their children, instilling in them a strong sense of connection, dedication to their family and love of laughter.

A Memorial Service will be held at 12:00 noon, Friday, March 7, 2025, at Pineview Funeral Service in Hayward. Father Karun Madanu will officiate. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
