In Memory of James (Jim) A. Johnson

July 28, 1932 - October 30, 2025

Jim was born on July 28, 1932, in Prairie Farm, to Hjalmer and Marie Johnson. He lived most of his life in the community and was a graduate of Prairie Farm High School.

Jim was an avid athlete with exceptional baseball pitching skills. When duty called in 1950, he set opportunities in professional baseball aside, and enlisted in the United States Army. He served overseas in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1953 as a corporal. After he returned from the war, Jim continued to pitch for numerous baseball and softball teams. As a fan of the Green Bay Packers and the UW Badgers, sports continued to be a part of his life.

On June 26, 1954, Jim was married to Janet Schlough, and together they owned and operated the Prairie Farm Locker and Meat Processing facilities for 37 years. They prided themselves for quality work and customer satisfaction.

Over the years, Jim was active in the community of Prairie Farm by serving as a member of the Lion’s Club, American Legion, Volunteer Fire Department, and the board of directors for Chibardun Telephone Cooperative. He was a lifelong member of United Lutheran Church and served the congregation as a council member. He also was a Boy Scout Leader and dressed up as Santa Claus for the local children’s Christmas.

Jim created wonderful memories with his family. He enjoyed boating, fishing, and deer hunting when time allowed from his busy work schedule. His grandchildren loved getting him out on the dance floor at family weddings. In his later years, he also enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s concerts and sporting events.

Jim will be lovingly remembered as a kind, gentle, hardworking man by his children, Dawn (Sonny) Kinzer of Port Orchard, WA, Larry (Cheryl) Johnson of Durand, and Beth (Gary) Risler of Prairie Farm; grandchildren, Brooke (Doug) Hills, Ana (Shawn) Safavi, Katrina (Heather) Kinzer, Jessica (Doug) Minahan, Joshua (Maureen) Johnson, Vanessa Johnson (Nathan Marrone), Seager (Bob) Okerglicki, and Clayton Risler; 14 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Ruth Sander.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Hjalmer and Marie; wife of 64 years, Janet; and brother, Hjalmer (John) Johnson.

A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, November 10, at United Lutheran Church, 120 River Ave N, Prairie Farm, with Reverend Sara C. Feld officiating. Visitation will be held at 10:30 a.m., followed by a 12:00 p.m. service. Following the service, interment will take place at Sunset Cemetery. Fellowship will continue with a luncheon provided at the church.
