In Memory of Janet E. Penney

September 30, 1942 - September 25, 2024

Janet Elaine Penney, age 81, of Cumberland, passed away on September 25, 2024, at Cumberland Healthcare. She was born on September 30, 1942, in Dayton, OH, to William and Wilma (Bowsher) Pierce.

On September 18, 1975, Janet married Charles “Chuck” Penney, and together they shared 49 beautiful years of marriage. Jan worked passionately for 28 years at the Cumberland Advocate, where she found joy in her dedication to the community and her work.

Jan had many loves in life, including listening to Elvis music, camping with Chuck in Spooner, her weekly Sunday visits to the Hertel Casino, and most importantly the Green Bay Packers. She was an avid reader and enjoyed the comfort of watching her favorite shows like Columbo, Monk, and the Hallmark Channel. Jan also loved giving back to the community through her volunteer work at the Rutabaga Festival, where she sold tickets for the beer garden and was known for her playful banter with patrons.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Chuck Penney of Cumberland; her daughter, Linda (Dickie) Phillips of Ohio; step-son: Gary (Cindy) Penney of Ohio; step-grandchildren: Jessie and Jake Phillips, Chris (Gina) Penney and Erin Penney; her brother, Rick (Patsy) Pierce of Ohio; her sister, Kathy Oppie of Washington; and numerous extended family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Wilma Pierce, and her stepdaughter, Barbie Penney.

A funeral service to celebrate Janet's life will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at Skinner Funeral Home in Cumberland, officiated by Pastor John Miels. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service.

Skinner Funeral Home of Cumberland is honored to be serving the family during this time.
