In Memory of Jeanne L. Awonohopay


January 13, 1956 - December 1, 2025

Jeanne Louise Awonohopay (Nowgiisookwe), age 69, of Cumberland passed away on Monday, December 1, 2025 at her home. She was born January 13, 1956 to Johnny and Grace (Merrill) Bearhart Sr.

Jeanne worked on the administrative side of various tribal departments prior to her retirement. Since then, she has been known to love sitting out on her porch, bingeing some good reality TV, and spending time with her grandchildren. In her earlier days she was wonderful at sewing and beading, until she was no longer able to do so. And, of course, we can't forget her love for bingo and her regular trips to the casino.

She is survived by her daughters, Aimee and Amanda Awonohopay; grandchildren, Cyrus, Winter, Trenton, Tyrone Jr., Parker, and Teran Awonohopay, and Hysen Powless; brother, BahWahSung (Celestine) Merrill; sister-in law, Rolaine Bearhart; and niece, Christine Hart.

Jeanne was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Awonohopay Sr.; sons, Tyrone Awonohopay Sr. and Anthony Awonohopay Jr.; daughter, Courtney Oustigoff; parents, Johnny and Grace Bearhart; brothers, Louis Bearheart, Johnny Bearhart Jr., Curtis Bearhart Sr., Michael Bearhart; sister, Michelle Bearhart; nephew, Robert Lemieux III; niece, Nicole Bearhart; and grandson, Remy “Aabinooj” Len Awonohopay.

Visitation will begin at 2 PM on Wednesday, Dec 3, 2025 at The Maple Plain Community Center.

Traditional Midewin Services will begin at 11 AM Thursday, Dec 4, 2025 at The Maple Plain Community Center. Burial will be in the Maple Plain Reserve Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Parker Awonohopay, Cyrus Awonohopay, Trenton Awonohopay, Tyrone Awonohopay Jr., Nicholas Bearhart, and Antonio Waukau. Honorary pallbearers are Isaac Merrill, Carlos Merrill, Lorenzo Merrill, Rebecca Bearhart, Christine Hart, and Rolaine Bearhart.
