In Memory of Jimmy (Jim) E. Gilbertson
Jimmy (Jim) Eugene Gilbertson, age 84 of Barron, was called home to meet his Loving Savior on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at Mayo Health System in Barron.
Jimmy was a great blessing when God sent him to parents Genard Julius and Anna Charlotte (Coon) Gilbertson on June 4, 1940. He was born in Chetek where his family lived until he was five. Their next-door neighbor, Tommy Barlett, welcomed him to their home and gave him cookies. The family moved to Barron shortly thereafter, where he spent the rest of his life.
He graduated from Barron High School at the age of 16, as learning came easy to him. He helped his father with the milk trucks and worked as a pin setter at the Barron Bowling Alley while attending the Rice Lake Normal School, where he received his teaching degree.
In 1963, Jimmy was drafted into the U.S. Army and stationed at Fort Hood, TX, where he trained as Tank Commander and was sent to Vietnam. After returning, he attended NCO Academy and served as a Company Clerk. After four years of service, he was honorably discharged but was later called back to assist the Inspector General in reviewing Army base records for another two years.
Once back in civilian life, Jimmy enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where he earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees. He then began his teaching career working in Barron, Turtle Lake, and at UW-Eau Claire. However, his true passion came when he began working at Murphy Oil, where he spent 35 years in various roles, including Safety Man and Project Manager. He also owned and operated six trucks. Jimmy's incredible work ethic made a lasting impact, and he retired after many successful years.
In 1988, Jimmy and his loving, lifetime partner, Cheryl Dahlke, were brought together and shared 38 devoted years. Cheryl’s note to Jimmy: “You were always loving, patient, kind and supportive. I can’t imagine the joy you are experiencing with our Heavenly Father. I will love you and miss you until the day we meet again. Please wait for me on that other shore. I love you most… No, I love you more! -Mom”
Jimmy is survived by his loving partner, Cheryl Dahlke, of Barron, as well as many friends and family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.
A memorial service for Jimmy will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Rausch and Steel Funeral Home in Barron, with Pastor Bob Friese officiating. Visitation will take place at the funeral home from 1:15 p.m. until the service begins. Burial will be at Wayside Cemetery in Barron.
