In Memory of John Mitchell
Jack passed peacefully at Dove Healthcare in Spooner on March 17th, 2025.
Jack was born in Spooner on December 4th, 1933, to Pheobe and Milton Mitchell. He grew up on the family farm just east of Spooner and graduated from Spooner High School in 1951. Upon graduating, he served in the US Army and was stationed in Germany to tour in Europe. After returning home from the service, his cousin, Georgia, set him up on a date with his future wife Muriel, and the rest was history. Jack and Muriel were married on August 8th, 1959, and raised two children, Carri and Rob. He worked at Harmon’s Service Station for a couple years, and as a salesman at GTC for many years. He mastered the art of BS-ing and on several accounts would do more chatting than working.
Jack loved going out for breakfast. His favorite place to frequent being Riverstreet to order his usual, the Riverstreeter. He loved his grand-dogs and spoiled them to no end… usually landing him in a bit of hot water after the dogs got a scolding for their unhealthy weight from day old donuts and table scraps from Grandpa. His great grandkids, Jackson and Ellie, were the light of his life. He loved fishing and hunting and did so well into his 80’s. He was an avid Wisconsin sports fan—Badgers, Brewers, Packers, you name it, he never missed a game, even up to the end. You would very rarely catch him without his Packers hat. When driving anywhere in his later years, he would speculate on everything, creating his infamous “I wonder…, I s’pose…, probably” saga. He was a lover of strawberries, breakfast, gravy, Tony’s pizza, and a good Manhattan. He was notoriously frugal, unless you got him in the casino or near a Super Bowl board. He was constantly puttering with equipment or odd jobs in the garage, until he got a little more unsteady, then he would still find a way to get it done with some of his helpers. He will be remembered for cutting wood, stacking, and then restacking wood in all months of the year. When he was younger, he was always getting into something with Muriel’s brothers and his cousins, so we are confident that there was quite the reunion up in heaven when he arrived.
Jack is survived by his daughter Carri, son Rob (Karen), grandchildren Alyssa (Josh), Mackenzie (Kyle), and Madison (Carter), and grandson Eric’s love, Amanda, and great-grandchildren Jackson and Ellie.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife Muriel, his beloved grandson Eric, his brothers Clarence and Eugene, sister Catherine, parents Pheobe (and yes, that’s how it was spelled and that’s what made her special) and Milton.
Our family is forever grateful for those that cared for Grandpa Jack and made his life brighter after Muriel’s passing. To Jacque and Jim Dahlgren, to Suzanne, Renata, and LeAnn from Hearts of Gold, and to Dove Healthcare, thank you.
