In Memory of Larry W. Meier


December 15, 1941 - June 27, 2024

Larry William Meier was born in Ashland, WI, on December 15, 1941, the son of Louis and Alice Ninabell (Lunney) Meier of the Stanberry community, and passed away on June 27, 2024.

In the early 1940’s the family moved to Oregon. They returned to Wisconsin in the late 40’s and bought a farm in the Earl area where he grew up. Lary attended the Earl State Graded School through the 6th grade, and 7th grade in Iron River, WI, and then finished back at Earl. He attended Spooner High School and graduated in 1959. He lettered in varsity football, baseball and boys’ volleyball. In April 1960, he joined the U.S. Navy, and was sent to Great Lakes Naval Training Center, from there to Dam Neck, VA for two years and transferred to ACU-2, Little Creek, VA and then to the USS Fort Snelling (LSD-30). He served during the Berlin Crisis, Cuban Missile Blockade and spent weeks searching for the USS Thresher- the nuclear sub that sank in the North Atlantic with 129 men aboard. He was honorably discharged in 1964.

On July 15, 1962, Larry married Yvonne (Bonnie) Hoecherl. After attending the National School of Meat Cutting in Toledo, OH, they moved to Minong and lived there for six years. In 1970 they moved back to the Earl/Springbrook communities to make their home. He was a long-time member of the former Sizer-Buchman Post 328 American Legion of Springbrook (now of Spooner), Life member of Spooner Am-Vet Post 190, and lifelong member of the NRA. He joined the Masonic Fraternity in Spooner in 1973 which is now Shell Lake/Spooner Lodge 221 (Keystone Lodge Hayward). He became a member of Zor Shrine in 1988 and is a member of the Hayward Musky Shrine Club. He served as president for both the Musky Shrine Club and Musky Cycle Patrol.
He was an avid hunter and totally loved archery, the moose have evaded him-but how close it came; that was bow hunting to him. He loved the many trips to Canada with good friends fishing.

Larry is proceeded in death by his parents, brother, Lewie D, infant sister, Lorraine, and grandson, Owen Meier.

Larry is survived by his wife, Yvonne of 60+ years, his daughter, Susan Ruble (Steve) of Clear Lake, WI; son, Michael Meier of Osceola, WI. Five grandchildren: Ian (Alissa) and Ivan Ruble, Kyle, Charlotte and Lucy Meier, great grandchildren Rowan and Lennox Ruble, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

A visitation will be held on Monday, July 1, 2024, at the Spooner Funeral Home from 4-7pm with a masonic service at 7pm. Interment with military honors will be held at the Earl Cemetery on Tuesday, July 2, at 11am.
