In Memory of Mark Sundeen

September 14, 1949 - August 13, 2024

Mark found peace on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at Marshfield Hospital in Marshfield, WI.

Mark was born on September 14th, 1949, to Jim and Mary (Neste) Sundeen. Mark was the first born of five children. He graduated from Spooner High School in 1967 and headed off to college at UW Superior. In 1970, he enlisted in the US Air Force, as a Psychiatric Aid. He was forever proud to have served his country. Upon returning from service, Mark resumed schooling and continued his higher education at UW Eau Claire. In the summer of 1974, he fell for the love of his life, Shelly Weber.

Mark and Shelly married on October 4th, 1974, at St Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Spooner, WI. Soon after, they had their first son, Spencer, and five years later they had Seth to complete their beautiful family. During Mark’s early years he worked at Sacred Heart Hospital as an orderly and then upon completion of his psychology and teaching degree, Mark started his teaching career in Wausau, WI. Shortly after, he was hired to teach biology at Spooner High School. He continued at Spooner for the next 30 years. Mark coached track and field, was a class advisor to many students, and guided and inspired many young people through their high school career. Mark also played an active role in youth sports and would be found many evenings umpiring baseball, softball, officiating basketball, and refereeing volleyball. He was a very busy guy and loved it.

Mark and Shelly were very active in their home community. One of their highlights each year was running the Spooner Rodeo Parade for over 30 years and being a part of the annual Spooner Rodeo. Mark enjoyed being on the rodeo committee for over 30 years and taking part in the rodeo activities and won the distinguished Rodeo Committee Member of the year.

One of the many joys in Mark’s life was being an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, ice fishing, bear hunting, and trapping. He truly loved all of nature. Early in his career he took a job with the Spooner DNR and went on to work there for over 25 years during the summer months.

Another joy in Mark’s life was being a grandpa (papa). He loved watching the grandkids in many activities, teaching them about nature often times as they canoed down the river or walked through the woods. He enjoyed many jokes and laughs with them.

Mark’s memory will live on through his wife of 50 years, Shelly Sundeen of Spooner; son, Spencer (Kelly) Sundeen of Ashland; son, Seth (Susan) Sundeen of Elk Mound; grandchildren, Carter, Rylee, Gavin, Brady, and Paige; siblings, Steve (Barb) Sundeen of Spooner, Jim (Kim) Sundeen of Trego, MaryBeth (Bucky) Pettingill of Trego, and Aaron (Shanna) Sundeen of Hudson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Kurt and Connie Henning of Hayward and Ray and Vikki Amundson of Frederic; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and countless friends.

Mark was joyfully reunited in heaven with his parents, Jim and Mary Sundeen; and mother and father- in law, Joe and Phyllis Weber.

Mark and his family would like to thank their many friends and family for their continued love and support. Thank you.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2024 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM at the Spooner Funeral Home.
