
In Memory of Martin “Sonny” Johnson, Jr.
Martin “Sonny” Johnson, Jr. was born to Martin Johnson, Sr. and Irene Taylor on June 11, 1943, in Shell Lake, Wisconsin, and was raised in the Northern Wisconsin area. He passed peacefully into the Spirit World on February 20, 2025, at the age of 81, surrounded by his loving family.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Martin was a man who always put family first. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Valerie Bear, his children Martin Johnson III, Dawn Johnson, Rick Bear, and Robin Johnson, and his beloved grandchildren: Ambria, Jolita, Meelo, Leila, Pete, Brittney, Robert, Dayzhan, Shannel, Isaiah, Naomi, Constance, and Martina.
Martin is further survived by his four sisters: Betty Johnson, Karin Bluegill, Wanda McFaggen, and Val (Randy) Phernetton, and his two brothers: Eugene (Anne) Johnson and Philip (Deb) Johnson.
Born in the Shell Lake area, Martin spent several years in Chicago, where he met and built a life with Valerie. Together, they started their family before returning home to Shell Lake in the early 1980s.
A hardworking and skilled tradesman, Martin earned credentials in Heavy Equipment Operation, Commercial Driving (CDL), and Electrical Work, demonstrating his strong work ethic and ability to master various fields.
Beyond his work, Martin found joy in traveling and exploring new places, attending his grandchildren’s sports games and activities, and tinkering in his garage, always working on a new project. He also had a deep respect for his culture and traditions, often attending traditional ceremonies and powwows, where he connected with his community and heritage.
A pillar of strength and wisdom, Martin leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and dedication to family.
Now, he joins the family and friends who have gone before him, reuniting with those who welcome him home.
A wake will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 5:00 PM at the St. Croix Tribal Center, 24663 Angeline Ave, Hertel, WI. Funeral services will follow on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at 10:00 AM, with interment at Sand Lake Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Rob Phernetton, Jim Barber, Dayzhan Churchill, Riley Churchill, Isaiah Johnson, Scott Johnson, and Jordan Buffalo.
Martin will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
