In Memory of Richard 'Dick' Cowger


January 2, 1944 - September 8, 2018

Dick Cowger, age 74, a resident of Minong, died on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at the Maple Ridge Care Center in Spooner.

Richard T. Cowger was born on January 2, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois to parents James D. and Mary C. (Thill) Cowger.  Dick attended and graduated from the Maine Township East School in 1962 in Park Ridge, Illinois.  Shortly after graduation, he was drafted into the US Army on June 11, 1965 where he served in the US, Germany and Vietnam until his honorable discharge on May 27, 1967.  He was discharged with the rank of Tec Sergeant receiving the following decorations- Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and was a Marksman in Rifle.  After his discharge, he returned to the Niles/ Des Plaines, Illinois area and worked in maintenance for Northwestern University.  He worked for the family business - Cowger Fence Company before taking a job in maintenance for Fluid Management and Gandolf companies both in Wheeling, Illinois.  In 1999, he moved to Minong where he opened his own welding shop at his home and became well known for growing his pride and joy tomatoes.

Dick is survived by his sister Mary Jane Anderson of Minong, nieces and nephews: Michelle Herrera of Des Plaines, IL, JoAnn (Servando) Malagon of Gurney, IL, Sandy Cowger of Pharr, TX, Katie Anderson of Minong, WI, Kurt (Carrie) Anderson of Chaska, MN, and many extended nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Dick is preceded in death by his parents, brother James M. Cowger, and brother in law Al Clements.

A graveside service for Dick Cowger will be held on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at 11:30 am at the Greenwood Cemetery in Minong with Pastor Ben Kidder officiating.  A celebration of life will follow at the Buck and Wing (Gruzies)  immediately following the service.
