In Memory of Roger D. Bender

January 24, 1946 - April 5, 2026

Roger David Bender, a proud Vietnam veteran, devoted husband and loving father, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 5, 2026, surrounded by family.

He was born on January 24, 1946 in Spring Valley, Minnesota. Roger served his country with honor during the Vietnam War, and an additional 20 years with the National Guard, carrying that same sense of duty and integrity into every aspect of his life. His strength, resilience, and quiet courage defined him, not only as a soldier, but as a man deeply committed to his family and community.

He was a dedicated husband to his wife of 56 years, Kay Bender, sharing a life built on love, respect, and unwavering partnership. As a father, Roger was a constant source of guidance, support, and unconditional love to his children, Jackie Lynne and her husband, Jeffrey Mike; and his son, James Christopher and his wife, Pieterke Bender. Roger took immense pride in his family and found his greatest joy in their accomplishments and happiness.

Roger started his professional journey with the gas company in Rochester, MN while also serving his community as a part-time police officer. He was a DJ during college and at a radio station in Ladysmith. Roger also worked as a teacher at the Wisconsin prison system. He was deeply committed to supporting fellow veterans, consistently working to raise resources and provide assistance to those who had served.

Together, Roger and his wife opened their home and their hearts to young adults from around the world over the years, offering them not only a place to stay, but genuine love, guidance, and a sense of family that lasted long beyond their time together.

His kindness, wisdom, and steady presence will be deeply missed.

A celebration of life to honor Roger’s life will be held on a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to St Jude's Children Hospital and veterans organizations, in recognition of Roger’s lifelong commitment to service.

Roger David Bender’s legacy of love, service, and strength will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
