In Memory of Sylvia E. Hansen


November 26, 1927 - May 2, 2022

Sylvia E Hansen, age 94 of Frederic, WI passed away May 2nd 2022.

Sylvia was born at home on a farm in West Denmark, a small Danish community west of Luck, WI to Hans and Elizabeth Clausen on November 26, 1927. Sylvia was preceded in death by husband Roy, daughter Joy Lynn, sisters Belva Jean, Marcia, brothers, Norman, Ardell, Floyd, Merlin, and parents Hans and Elizabeth Clausen.

She grew up in the West Denmark area, attending the Little Butternut School through 8th grade, and the Luck High School. She was baptized, confirmed, and married at the West Denmark Church. After graduating from high school, she took nursing classes offered at the Frederic hospital in 1946. She loved everything about being a nurse and caring for her patients. It was at the hospital that she met her husband Roy, when his mother was a patient there. They were married and made their home in Frederic. As the children were born, they joined Pilgrim Lutheran Church. Sylvia became very involved in her church by teaching Sunday school, Summer School, President of the LCV and Circle Leader many times. She also served on the church council, Evangelism committee, and Pilgrim players group. She was a member there for over 59 years when she joined the New Hope Lutheran Church in Grantsburg in 2009. In her own words, “My walk with God started many years ago when I was a little girl, and my mother tied a penny in the corner of my handkerchief and sent me to Sunday School with my older siblings. With love and faith in God you will never go wrong. She had some fantastic mentors on the way which led her to New Hope Lutheran Church, Pastor Emory Johnson and all the members of New Hope.” She loved you all.

She had a zest and love for life and people. She ministered and encouraged everyone she met. Her favorite family pastime was watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren loving the water and having fun every summer at their cabin on North Sand Lake. She felt blessed to have this special time with them. She and Roy enjoyed many travels with their friends

She was very involved in her community. They were involved in building both the Frederic swimming pool and the Frederic golf course. When the bowling alley was built in 1957 in Frederic, she learned the game and went with her team to many state tournaments. She loved playing and watching golf. Sylvia served on the Frederic Village Board and the Election board for many years and after the loss of daughter Joy, she was asked to serve on the Polk County Cancer board. She stayed active fighting cancer by having door to door cancer crusades each year in Frederic, finally starting the Frederic Cancer Walk in 1994. Sylvia’s commitment to her community extended when she became a member of the Frederic American Legion Auxiliary, Mentor for Polk County Kinship and the Rowdy Red Hat Mommas. Additionally, in 2007, she and a friend, Luann Ackerley started Coats for Kids. The two friends, along with a fantastic committee and New Hope Lutheran Church they were able to provide warm clothing to countless children. Always thinking about and doing for others.

She is survived by daughters Judy (Dale) Johnson, Patti (Terry Mattson) Grandchildren April (Daniel) Johnson, Joshua (Micki) Johnson, Zachary (Lisa) Mattson, Jacob (Jennifer) Johnson, Carissa (Mark) Ridenour. 18 Great Grandchildren: Graham, Grayden, Ashley, Derek, Tate, Alex, Xander, Zane, Jude, Marek, Mauve, Braeden, Abigail, Leah, Philomena, Quinn, Stella, and Max, Sister Lila Larson, Her special angel, Jill Beverlin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to New Hope Lutheran Church, Polk County Kinship, or a local organization that makes a difference in the lives of others.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at 11:00AM at the New Hope Lutheran Church in Grantsburg with Rev. Emory Johnson officiating visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place at the Maple Grove Cemetery following the service.

Arrangements are entrusted to Rowe Funeral Home in Frederic.
