In Memory of William "Bill" C. Garling
William Charles Garling, 92, of Cumberland passed away on March 9, 2025, at his home just as he wished.
He was born November 10, 1932, in Almena, WI to Cecil and Eda (Lovaas) Garling. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Matthew Church, in Almena, WI. He married Elaine Frie on May 19, 1961 at St. Matthew Church.
In his younger days, he traveled out west to find a job, working in Oregon, North Dakota, and Minnesota. He enlisted in the Navy in February of 1952 for 4 years, and got to see a lot of other countries - being discharged in 1956. Following that he was employed by Reserve Mining Co. in Silver Bay, MN, working on the railroad.
Bill and Elaine lived in Silver Bay for a year, and then bought a hobby farm near Two Harbors, MN. Bill had horses, a few steers, and always a dog. He did a lot of hunting on their land, and fishing on nearby lakes. Together they raised their two daughters, who Bill taught to pick agates in old gravel pits and on gravel roads. As a family they took lots of fishing and camping trips.
Bill was active at Hope Lutheran Church in Two Harbors, MN for 30 years. In 1995, he retired from the Mining Co., and moved back to Cumberland, WI to be closer to family and old friends. They took some trips to Florida, Arizona, the Black Hills, Branson and Glacier Park, as well as some small trips to see their daughters and grandchildren. He enjoyed seeing his grandchildren grow up to be great adults.
Bill's favorite passion was keeping the lawn cut so it was always looking good. Bill and Elaine also enjoyed gardening together and being members of St. Matthew church.
Bill is survived by his wife, Elaine; children, Pam Johnson, of New London, MN, and Vickie Sullivan (Mike Miller) of Prairie Farm, WI; grandchildren, Rebecca (Levi) Langseth, Joseph (Allie) Johnson, Michelle Johnson (Rylee Raddatz), Rachel (Carter) Luehrs, and Thomas (Ashley) Sullivan; five great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Isla, Riley, Eloise, and Emma; sisters, Margaret Tutila and Bonnie Avery; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
