POLK COUNTY (DrydenWire) — A three-vehicle crash on Highway 35 near Milltown has claimed the life of a Grantsburg woman, according to an updated press release from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 3:24p on Friday, May 23, 2025, just south of 210th Avenue in the Town of Milltown.
Authorities say northbound traffic had slowed due to wildlife crossing the highway. A northbound pickup truck attempting to avoid a collision with the slowing vehicles rear-ended one vehicle, glanced off, and veered into the southbound lane where it collided head-on with an SUV.
The driver of the SUV, has been identified as 48-year-old Maria Scheider of Grantsburg, Wisconsin, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the pickup sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the rear-ended vehicle reported minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Polk County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Polk County Sheriff Brent Waak expressed gratitude to first responders, including the Milltown, Balsam Lake, and Centuria Fire Departments, as well as Lakes Region EMS and Northwestern Municipal Ambulance, for their assistance at the scene.
