Douglas Mrotek for Sawyer County Sheriff

Career Overview

My law enforcement career of over 35 years began in 1983, working as a Reserve Officer with the City of Hayward Police Department until I became a full-time Patrol Officer in 1991.   During my career with the City of Hayward Police Department, in addition to my daily patrol and investigative duties, I taught the D.A.R.E. program to over 1400 fifth grade students over a ten year period in the Hayward School District.

In 2014, I became Chief of Police of the Town of Hayward Police Department.  As Chief my responsibilities include managing the department’s annual budget, which I have kept under budget every year since 2014.  I was responsible for department staffing needs to ensure that state laws and local ordinances were enforced.  I also serve as the Coordinator of the Sawyer County Highway Safety Commission.

In 2017, I was appointed by the Governor of Wisconsin to fill the remainder of the term of retiring Sheriff Mark Kelsey.  As your Sheriff, I have the responsibility of managing a large annual budget, administrating the jail with over 100 inmates, and serving the court. I am responsible for overseeing the Sheriff’s Patrol Division, Investigations Division, Jail Division and Records Division; leading over 50 Sheriff’s Office staff members.

I am also active in the community, serving as a member of the Sawyer County Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee, as well as communicating with and assisting our local governing bodies, community organizations and community events in Sawyer County.

Personal Life

I have three sons, Daniel, Dustin and Chase.  I enjoy everything our community has to offer with our four seasons of recreation.  I am active with many of our community organizations promoting and enhancing our Sawyer County events and recreational activities.
