July 29, 1951 - May 13, 2025

Douglas “Smiley” Sundquist, age 73, resident of Grantsburg, WI, passed away at home on May 13, 2025.

Smiley was born on July 29, 1951, to Charles “Swede” and Irma (Weinseril) Sundquist in Grantsburg, WI. He attended Grantsburg School District and graduated from the local high school in 1969.

At a young age, Doug began having issues with his vision. His constant squinting and the smile that came with it was noticed by his second-grade coach, Mr. Olson, who called out, “Hey you! The smiley one!” This nickname “Smiley” followed him throughout his life.

On October 22, 1983, Smiley married Cathryn Studer. In 2024, they celebrated their 41st anniversary. A devoted husband, he adored her and gave her more than she could ever ask for.

Fishing remained a lifelong passion of Smiley’s. He spent over 30 years as a fishing guide working for Grantsburg Associates, a fishing camp that began in the 40’s. Keeping true to his love and appreciation of nature, he and Katie would spend time together watching birds. Their favorite spot was Crex Meadows, which they frequented and enjoyed attending the programs and gatherings hosted. At one point, they took a trip to Nebraska to see the Sand Hill Crane migration.

Smiley’s passion for cooking and baking was shown through the delicious meals and breads he prepared. His chicken wild rice soup was a hit amongst all who had it, along with his warm homemade bread.

Smiley is preceded in death by his parents, Swede and Irma, his sister Diane, and his stepson, Russell Bruner.

He is survived by his loving wife, Cathryn, stepson, Donald Bruner, and his step grandchildren, Jack and Mason Bruner.
