BARRON COUNTY — Gov. Tony Evers has appointed Jodi Kummet as the new Barron County Sheriff. She is replacing Chris Fitzgerald after his retirement from law enforcement, according to a press release from Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers. Kummet, a veteran law enforcement officer with over 30 years of experience, will officially begin her term on July 28, 2025, and serve through January 2027.

Gov. Tony Evers today appointed Jodi Kummet as Barron County Sheriff. The appointment fills a vacancy created by Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald’s retirement. Kummet will complete the remainder of the unexpired term that ends January 2027. Her appointment is effective on July 28, 2025.
“With decades of experience in law enforcement in northwest Wisconsin, Master Trooper Kummet has built strong relationships in the community and has the expertise necessary to be ready to lead on day one,” said Gov. Evers. “During my time on the road, I have experienced her kindness and excellence through her work with the Wisconsin State Patrol, and I have no doubt that she will be an excellent sheriff for the people of Barron County.”
Kummet has served more than 30 years as a law enforcement professional with the Wisconsin State Patrol, retiring in March 2025. During her time in the Wisconsin State Patrol, Kummet began her career as an inspector and rose through the ranks as a trooper, senior trooper, and finally a senior master trooper for nine years until she retired. In addition to her patrol duties, she has served as a field training officer, evidence custodian, and functioned as incident command during specialized investigations. She has conducted criminal investigations and assisted in joint operations with multiple agencies across the state. She has also supported agencies out of state with dignitary protection and riot response. Kummet also has specialized training in incident response, terrorism prevention, and crash scene analysis.
“Throughout her more than 30-year career as a state trooper, Jodi Kummet served the people of northwest Wisconsin with courage and integrity,” said Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent Tim Carnahan. “Spending most of her career at our Spooner Post, Jodi was invested in the safety and well-being of her community. As the new sheriff, I’m sure she will rely on her experience and commitment to public service to continue protecting and serving the people of Barron County, and we congratulate her.”
Kummet was born and raised in Barron County, attended the criminal justice program at Chippewa Valley Technical College, and graduated from the Wisconsin State Patrol Academy in 1994. As a lifelong resident of northwest Wisconsin, Kummet is deeply committed to the safety and well-being of the Barron County community.
