BARRON COUNTY -- Did you notice all the green fields across the county this spring? Last year roughly 12,000 acres of cover crops were planted in Barron County.
If you haven’t tried cover crops or had success with them in the past, here’s a great opportunity: the Barron County Soil & Water Conservation Department is again offering an incentive of $25 an acre (40 acre max) through the County Conservation Assistance Program.
This incentive is offered to assist operators to implement a new management practice; those who have received 3 or more years of cover crop payments are not eligible for funding as we are confident you’ve experienced the benefits of this practice and will continue to use it.
The focus of this incentive is to provide soil cover after wheat, corn silage, or snap beans. The early harvest of these crops allows for planting of legume cover crops which produce nitrogen for the following growing season. There are also options for after soybeans and corn grain.
An application must be signed before planting the cover crop to be eligible for cost sharing.
