Washburn County Responds To Controversy Regarding Roadside Bait Shop

WASHBURN COUNTY — In response to growing public interest and concern, Washburn County officials are addressing the recent zoning matter involving a roadside bait shop, according to a press release issued today from the Washburn County Board Chair.

PRESS RELEASE

Washburn County is aware of the public interest and concern surrounding the recent zoning matter involving a roadside bait shop. The structure was determined to be an unpermitted use under current zoning regulations, and a routine notice of violation was issued to the landowner. No citation or fines have been issued.

This matter began when the Washburn County Zoning Department was contacted by a community member with concerns that the bait shop might be in violation of local zoning ordinances.

We understand the strong emotions this situation has generated, especially given the involvement of a local youth demonstrating initiative and entrepreneurial spirit while our zoning staff is responsible for applying the ordinance fairly and consistently across the county.

Unfortunately, in recent days, some of the public response has crossed a line into threatening or aggressive behavior toward staff. We urge everyone to share their concerns respectfully and help ensure a safe and civil environment for all.

To address the matter constructively, Washburn County will be exploring possible options for working with the family to find a lawful path forward.

We appreciate the community’s interest and engagement and remain committed to fair and thoughtful dialogue on this issue.
